Bimi and the Missing Pearl

🔊 Listen to this story

By the gentle waters of Pebblebrook Creek, a little otter named Bimi could hardly wait for the Blossom Moon Festival. Her best friend, Nyla the beaver, lent her a beautiful necklace of river pearls that had once belonged to Nyla's grandmother.

While playing hide-and-seek among the tall reeds, Bimi's necklace caught on a branch. One shining pearl cracked loose and tumbled into the water with a tiny splash.

Frightened, Bimi tucked the broken necklace under a mossy rock and joined the festival, pretending nothing had happened. But the music didn't feel as sweet, and the dancing didn't feel as fun, with the secret sitting heavy in her heart.

That night, unable to sleep, Bimi told her grandmother, Nana Fen, everything. Nana Fen held her paw gently and said, "A true friend would rather hear the truth than a happy pretend." The next morning, Bimi found Nyla and told her exactly what had happened.

Nyla was sad about the pearl, but she smiled at Bimi's honesty, and together they searched the creek bed until they found it shining in the sand. Old Mr. Crabapple, the wise crab who mended trinkets, restrung the necklace better than before — and Bimi learned that telling the truth, even when it's hard, always makes things better.
