Tumbi and the Moonlit Baobab Tree

🔊 Listen to this story

Deep in the golden savanna, under a giant baobab tree, lived a small pangolin named Tumbi. She had shimmering scales like tiny leaves, but she was very shy, and whenever she felt nervous, she rolled herself into a perfect little ball and hid until the world felt safe again.

One evening, a cheerful hornbill named Kiki fluttered down beside her. 'Tumbi, come to the baobab tonight!' she chirped. 'All the animals are gathering to share stories under the stars.' Tumbi's heart fluttered nervously, but she decided to go, just this once.

As they walked together, Kiki suddenly stopped. A long line of busy ants was marching straight toward a family of sleeping dormice, heading right for their precious stash of berries. 'Oh no,' whispered Kiki, 'we must do something, but we mustn't hurt the ants either.'

Tumbi took a deep breath, curled into her tight, round ball, and gently rolled herself right across the ants' path. Her smooth scales made a soft little hill, and the ants happily marched over her instead, changing direction without anyone getting hurt at all.

The dormice woke up to find their berries safe, and all the animals cheered for clever, kind Tumbi. From that night on, she knew her special scales weren't just for hiding — they were for helping too, and she never felt too shy to join her friends again.
