The Cloud Who Was Afraid to Rain

🔊 Listen to this story

High above the world, tucked between two silver mountains, lay Neelgun Valley — a place where clouds grew soft and woolly, like sheep made of mist. Meher, a young cloud-shepherd, carried a tiny silver whistle that could call the clouds to graze on morning sunlight and drift gently over the valley.

One evening, as Meher gathered her fluffy flock to rest, she noticed a little gray cloud named Dhuaan hiding behind a mountain peak. He was trembling, for every time he grew heavy enough to rain, a soft rumble of thunder followed — and thunder frightened him terribly.

Meher climbed the hill and sat beside Dhuaan, humming the lullaby her grandmother used to sing about rain being the valley's sweetest gift. 'Thunder is not angry,' she whispered, 'it's just the sky clapping happily when you share your rain.'

Slowly, Dhuaan let a few gentle drops fall, and when the soft thunder rumbled, it sounded almost like applause. Below, the sleepy gardens of Neelgun Valley stretched their petals and drank thirstily, and moon-lilies bloomed silver in the dark.

From that night on, Dhuaan proudly led the cloud herd across the sky each evening, no longer afraid of the thunder's cheerful clap. And Meher smiled, tucking her whistle away, knowing that even the shyest cloud can learn to shine — one gentle raindrop at a time.
